What happened to Bette Moore - now Bette Petrie

Currently Bette and David Petrie own and operate a factory business in the Northern Beaches of Sydney undertaking projects for a number of clients including designers, architects, builders, carpenters etc.

They have three children.  Their daughter,  Dannielle married a Canadian and has been living in Australia for 15 years with their two children aged 4yrs and 2yrs. Their next child is a son Jon, who is 31yrs old. Jon has an Intellectual disability and spends most of the his days with Bette and David helping out with the business where he can. Their youngest son Damon is 30yrs old and is a Chartered Accountant and lives in Balmain. Damon has recently announced his engagement to his long term girl friend.

Some of you know Bette’s husband David Petrie and his family, from having the Pannaroo Motel (now Mid City) in Singleton. David has always had a keen interest in computers and really enjoyed timber.  These days he is one of the premier file creators for the CNC router, a computer controlled cutting machine used in their business. He is now undertaking a degree in Accountancy via External Studies.

As for Bette, her hobby involves reading & learning so that they can make incremental changes to their son Jon so that he is able to function better in the world. In Bette's busy working day she explains, educates and deals with customers and enters projects into the system as well as debt collection, Public Relations, Health & Wellbeing, process planning, and generally manages what happens on a day to day basis.
Bette and David are unable to make the 2015 reunion as their eldest daughter and family will be moving to Canada shortly after the reunion and every minute with them counts.

What happened to Ruth Jakins - now  known as Ruth Taylor

Those '65ers with long memories will probably recall Ruth Jakins, who did primary school in Singleton and one year at high school. At the end of 1965 she moved with her family to the NSW central coast for her father's work. A thumbnail sketch of Ruth's career is: did her higher school certificate (HSC), completed a Bachelor of Mathematics, taught for a few years, married, had two children, and did private tutoring for a long time.

Ruth had a happy, smiling face and curly blond hair. Her lively, spirited emails suggest that her basic personality has not changed much (the hair probably has!). She cannot be at the reunion as she and her husband will be visiting Alaska and north-west USA at the time, but thinking about her time in Singleton has fired-up her brain cells.

Her teacher memories include Miss C Bell, who taught the girls sewing, and she was young and lovely (Miss Bell left Singleton High at the same time as Ruth), and Mr Peter Singleton, who taught art. Ruth distinctly remembers one lesson where they were expected to draw a face as a series of plane surfaces, and she is still flummoxed by that!

At 8.30 on Thursday mornings Ruth, Andrea Witt and Eveline Wolters had music theory at the Convent of Mercy and they had permission to be late for class, which happened to be art. Ruth and Eveline were in no hurry to get back but Andrea always wanted to get back quickly because she did not like missing art classes! In one home science class, the girls were told that  next week they would be making 'creamed potatoes', an exciting prospect until they found it was just another name for mashed potato, which they had at home all the time. And in primary school men from the army camp would come and drill all the students in marching, a very important skill!

What happened to Bruce Paton?
Those who were at Singleton Primary School in 1964 will remember Bruce Paton, a popular boy in Ron Lazarus’s 6A class. His father was a well-known local vet, Wal Paton.
Bruce got a pleasant surprise when Ken Dreaper phoned inviting him to the Singleton High School 1965-1970 reunion. Ken referred him to the excellent Facebook pages where the 1964 Singleton Primary School photo jumped out at him; so many faces still looked so familiar. Even though he did not go on to SHS he is really pleased to have been remembered, found and invited to the reunion!
Bruce has good memories of Singleton in his primary school days. He left Singleton to go to boarding school in Sydney.
After high school Bruce did medicine at the University of NSW, and Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney, and in South Africa and England, finally setting up practice in Maitland in 1986. Having grown up in Dangar Rd, it was fulfilling to also visit at Singleton Hospital, with Dr John Lorang assisting him when operating.
Bruce’s partner is Kerry (Rolls-physio) and they have 4 daughters (= 5 lovely women!) and 3½ grandchildren. Their girls did psychology, vet science, mathematics/statistics and primary teaching, the latter just finishing yesterday 18/9/15! As they are starting their careers, Bruce’s has extinguished!
After he semi-retired in 2010 Bruce started doing interesting rural remote locums. They also bought an old sailing boat, put in a new engine etc., learnt to sail and in the next year set off to sail around the world: 2011-12, south-east Asia; 2013, Indian Ocean to southern Africa; then 2014, south Atlantic to Brazil and to Trinidad. They then backpacked South America, Mexico and Cuba, then had a Caribbean sailing season.
Bruce and Kerry are now home (they still live in Maitland) during the Caribbean cyclone season, catching up with family, friends and their farm. In November they fly back  to Trinidad to start sailing again; Panama Canal and South Pacific to New Zealand will take 12 months. They should complete their circumnavigation in a few years time.
It seems amazing that 50 years have gone by since Singleton Primary School. Bruce is looking forward to catching up with old friends at the 2015 reunion dinner.

What happened to Kathy Smith now Kathie Bonham-Smith.
Kathy went to Singleton High for most part of Year 1 , then went to St. Catherines but went to the primary school with most of the group. Kathy is married and has five sons and is currently working at Singleton Hospital in the recovery.
Kathy will be going to the reunion and is looking forward to catching up with everyone
The photo is of Kathy working in Africa and she will be going back again in Feb.

What happened to David Chapman?
------------------------------------------------
Another student who was in Ron Lazarus’s 6A class at Singleton Primary School in 1964 is David Chapman, son of local pharmacist, Ken Chapman. David and Bruce Paton left Singleton to go to high school in Sydney, at Barker College. David recalls that the practice of caning continued at high school, and at one stage he held the record with 14 strokes, until another boy got 76!
The SHS Facebook photo of Jane Simpson was taken when she and David were celebrating their 60th birthday at Subo restaurant in Newcastle. They were born just hours apart at Fairholme Maternity Hospital in Singleton. David lived on the corner of Pitt and King Sts and Tony Cox lived on the next corner.
David studied veterinary science expecting a career in mixed practice and farming, but graduated during the beef recession with no country work available. He married another vet student at 21 and ended up in small animal practice, buying Waitara Veterinary Hospital in Sydney. He went back to university and did a Diploma in Business Management and a Masters in Agriculture, grew soybeans and raised cattle on the NSW north coast, and then irrigated pastures and tea trees on the Ord River.
David and Frances Teasdale first met at the age of 3 at Sonia Witt’s pre-school in Singleton and they married 35 years later! Frances set up an Aboriginal preschool project in Kununurra and did cooking talkback shows on ABC radio, while David got involved in local government for 6 years and was Shire President. They developed a range of tea tree products and lived in the UK for 5 years marketing them throughout the UK and Europe. Their tea tree antiseptic products were used in a published trial for antibiotic resistant bacteria (MRSA infections); unfortunately the regulations were too difficult to get them registered as medicines. They sold the business and went home (to Newcastle) for their two sons’ high school years. Back in Newcastle they bought the old CBC Bank building opposite the old post office and renovated it for serviced offices, a French restaurant in the old bank chambers, and an apartment on the roof.
They are keen skiers and did a house swap in France for a season 10 years ago where the boys attended primary school in an ancient village with just 8 other students from 7-11 years old. Ben has just finished university but works as a ski instructor (internationally qualified because of his French), and Will is at the University of New England.
Frances and David caught up with their 5th class teacher, Allan Searle, some years ago and he said there were 53 or 54 in that class at Singleton Primary School. David fondly remembers Allan Pankhurst in 3rd class, and less fondly Colin Butterworth in 4th class, who caned Bruce Paton and him for thinking that it was funny when he stepped off a chair and banged his funny bone on the door knob.
David and Frances have since gone their separate ways. Unfortunately he will not be able to attend the reunion as he is in New Zealand looking after some accommodation for the ski season. After years as a private pilot he got his helicopter licence this year and has just done a helicopter mountain flying course in Wanaka NZ, and is trying belatedly and unsuccessfully to get fully certified as a ski instructor.
David is really pleased to hear what everyone has been up to these last 50 years. The photo shows David with his son, Will.
